Yecla – The Perfect Setting For Your Oasis

If you dream of tranquility in a hideaway in the mountains or unspoiled villages then rural Spain is for you.  An area full of forgotten villages, mediaeval castles and fantastic views over mountains, vineyards, orchards and olive groves with prolific flora and fauna.  Escape the rat race to your own personal oasis and enjoy a more relaxed and peaceful way of life, whether it be for short breaks to recharge the batteries or your new permanent home.

The perfect retreat, whether you enjoy walking, biking, painting, photography or simply soaking up the 310 days of sunshine beside your own private pool.

Yecla is still a very traditional Spanish town situated 96Km north of Murcia, at the slopes of the Cerro del Castillo. It lies alongside “El Carche”, which is the longest mountain range in Spain and is surrounded by small mountains.  Along with its neighbouring towns of Jumilla, Villena and Pinoso it is growing in popularity, whilst retaining the traditional Spanish town culture and values.  An affluent city, the principle industries being the manufacture of furniture and wine. The landscape is characterised by the rugged mountains and agriculture of the region.

The stone age remains of Monte Arabí are to the northwest. The city received its Coat of Arms from King Charles II in 1687. It has castle ruins and two prominent churches: the 17th-century Gothic-style Church of the Saviour and the Romanesque-style Basilica of the Immaculate Conception, completed in 1868. The writer Azorín used the latter as a setting for his novel La voluntad (1902; “Volition”).

The town boasts its own theatre, cinema, football ground, municipal swimming baths and a modern hospital. The many bars and restaurants, include Chinese, Italian, Mexican and the more traditional tapas bars along with numerous cafes. The plaza de toros holds concerts as well as the more usual bullfights.

Fiestas are at the heart of Spanish culture and Yecla is no exception enjoying four throughout the year. The Fiestas Patronales in December, Semana Santa (or holy week) at Easter, Fiesta de Primavera and San Isidro in spring and the September fair. The surrounding towns also have their own fiestas which you will be able to visit and enjoy. The wine festival in Jumilla during September, where the wine really does flow through the streets, and over you, and Villenas' Moors and Christians festival with mock battles are two of note. The atmosphere during fiestas is unbelievable, everyone is laughing, singing, dancing and above all happy and friendly.
